In early June, application virtualization firm Citrix broached the idea of enabling Windows applications on the iPhone by way of their XenApp technology. Late this month, Citrix surprised and excited with the announcement that a Citrix Receiver for the iPhone was well under way.
Citrix’s XenApp suite is a powerful package that centrally runs applications so that clients may connect to and interact with them as though they were on the desktop. Citrix XenApp goes much further than remote desktop or VNC by intercepting and transmitting GDI calls, the foundational language used by Windows XP to render its UI and any application.
The development of a Citrix Receiver for the iPhone would allow the device to connect to these remote applications — be they Windows or Windows Mobile — as though they were native applications. As you might imagine, the possibilities for such a technology are effectively limitless; Citrix has bandied about flash webpages, IE-only apps (ew), medical applications and more. If you’re reading this, you’re already drooling over the potential.
Their community blog is still taking suggestions for compelling examples of non-iPhone apps that would represent “great visual example of the power of Citrix and the iPhone.” Hop on over, take a look and leave a comment.
