We all know Crysis 2 is on the way. That’s great news for any shooter fan–the first game was an absolute technical marvel, and it still sits upon the graphics powerhouse throne almost two years after its release. To compliment the good looks, Crysis was also a blast to play (literally). From the open-ended tactics and destructible environments, to the ability to chokehold enemies and chuck them off a cliff, the game was sublime. It ended on a cliffhanger, and even without the story being put on pause, we knew Crytek was far from done with this series.
There’s been some action recently from those graphics nuts over in Frankfurt, Germany in the form of a mysterious website. Crytek launched Crynetsystems.com and it serves as a viral teaser site for Crysis 2. On the site are technical readouts and promos for ‘Nanosuit2’, the next generation of the robust armor suit featured in Crysis that allows the player to have MAXIMUM everything. The Crynet website explains all of the advancements in the suit’s technology, and includes images and video of the suit in different design phases.
What does Crynet teach us? We know that Crysis 2 will take place at least four years after the conclusion of Crysis, as it’s mentioned on the site that Nanosuit2 is being released four years following the unveiling of the original suit. The site also explains that after only 2 months of the release of the original suit, it had become the armor of choice of militaries worldwide. Can we expect a significantly higher amount of suit vs. suit fighting in Crysis 2?
The Nanosuit2 is explained to have advanced primarily in how the user interacts with the armor. The spec sheets explain that the suit feeds real-time battle data directly into the brain. Things like battle telemetry, control of senses, and regulation of bodily-manufactured chemicals like dopamine and lactic acid are constantly monitored and fed into the user’s brain. This could mean that we’ll see a more advanced HUD in the game, dishing out a slew of battle-critical information in real time. Perhaps this means even more abilities and heightened senses. I could see this as an excuse to add a ‘bullet-time’ ability–although I’m not sure if I want that.
The big question that is raised by Crynet–will the good guys have Nanosuit2? The Crynet website is designed to be a promotional source for Nanosuit2, and it makes no indication of who the suit is being marketed to. Crynet takes a very neutral stance toward any and all interested parties in Nanosuit2, almost presenting itself as a sort of arms-dealing kingpin. In fact, the information page ends with these lines: “The Crynet Systems Nanosuit 2.0. The next generation of combat technology has arrived. Wouldn’t you rather have it on your side?” Does this mean we’ll see competition for the suit? A battle over such technology would be ugly. Here’s hoping that Nomad, Psycho, and the crew get their hands on it first.
