Crytek Acquires Free Radical

Crytek Acquires Free Radical

crytekCrytek, the techsmiths known for their groundbreaking graphical marvel Crysis, announced Thursday that it had acquired Free Radical Design Limited. Free Radical, located in Nottingham (United Kingdom) will be soon integrated into Crytek’s network of studios.

Free Radical is no stranger to the FPS gaming genre as it has Timesplitters 1, 2, and Future Perfect as well as the recently released Haze in its portfolio. There has been no word on whether the acquisition will affect Free Radical’s current works in progress, including the to-be-announced Timesplitters 4 and its ‘secret LucasArts project’ as named on their website. Crytek’s move will preserve all 40 jobs at Free Radical.

From the press release, Avni Yerli, Managing Director of Crytek, said, “We’re very excited about this step to expand Crytek into the UK with such an experienced and highly talented team. Free Radical Design is a great fit to Crytek and its culture, given that Free Radical has a proven track record on delivering high quality games. The combination of this team, the Crytek network and our CryENGINE technology will be a foundation for outstanding gaming experiences and a magnet for the best talent in the UK.”

The prospects of getting CryEngine2 into more developer hands is exciting.  Perhaps this means we will see a new Timesplitters game on CryEngine2?  Regardless, it is very good news to learn that Crytek—a company that takes great risks to progress graphics technology—is expanding their global presence in the midst of success.
