Crytek took the cover off of their latest project today, and it’s a rather interesting play from the company that is known for building games that your computer can’t run. The project, titled Warface, is a free-to-play “social FPS service”. Warface’s website has gone live as of this afternoon, and though the game hasn’t even entered closed beta testing yet, aspiring soldiers can sign up for the beta, as well as reserve their in-game ID before release (which seems to have become all the rage these days).
Little is known about Warface at this time. The game’s website does list some details regarding the game, and offers a gorgeous trailer showing some gameplay. Warface will certainly be the best looking free-to-play game out there, as it is built on the astounding CryEngine 3. The game looks to be a modern military shooter, with all classes using weapons currently employed in the armed forces of today, but also enjoys some futuristic bits thrown in—most notably battlemech style armor suits. The setting seems awfully reminiscent of the Crysis games.
Warface will feature multiple classes in a variety of multiplayer modes. The trailer showcases four classes—Rifleman, Engineer, Sniper, and Medic—each performing as you would expect them to. The website goes into small details about the game types as well. It will feature cooperative Players Vs. Environment modes, which promises regularly updated content every single day. As expected, Warface will also feature Player Vs. Player modes, and while full details are not yet available, the website does promise modes that are “proven classics and true innovations”.
Head on over to warface.com to reserve your name and get in line for the beta, which is expected to go live sometime in 2012. Get ready to show Crytek your warface.
