Daedalus Project studies the psychology behind MMORPG players

Perhaps this is timely for the Icrontic community, considering some of us just started playing a very popular MMORPG together. The Daedalus Project is a long-term research project run by Nick Yee, a Stanford graduate who now works for the Palo Alto Research Center. Daedalus conducts various surveys in behaviors, opinions, and attitudes about MMORPGS, and makes this data available for anyone who is interested in it.

Reading the comments on his blog shows that many researchers and students having been using his data for a variety of interesting projects. Of note are some of the comments regarding identification of personality types that are susceptible to addiction, and ways to break that addiction. I’ve often heard the lament “I play WoW for 5-10 hours a week and have never been addicted. I don’t understand how people can let a game ruin their lives.”

Perhaps the answer lies within the numbers.

jokerz4fun WoW has destroyed many relationships and lives. For few its their escape from reality. A place where they feel like they can fit in or become a part of something bigger and better.
  2. primesuspect
primesuspect I don't think it's specific to WoW. People prone to addictive behaviors who happen to find WoW can definitely be a problem, but if not WoW, those people would find something else.

jokerz4fun I was using it from experience, as in Ive lost many friends to WoW.

primesuspect Oh me too. But sadly, I've also lost friends to other addictions as well. The pattern is the same for all of them.
  5. Dare
Dare 'slong as people remember its a game, 'sall good.
But people cross that line alot, and its rather sad.
I play alot of games, and for a while I zone out on them.
But after a while I get bored and move on.
Luckily they keep makin' new games for me to play when bored. ^_^
