Dave Orton quits ATI

The man who steered ATi to its peak with the Radeon 9×00 series, and kept it relatively afloat before the 2900 shenanigans is leaving AMD at the end of the month. It’ll be interesting to see how AMD/ATi slogs on without Mr. Orton. You can read more about it here.

jared Can't say I blame him. Things have been going steadily downhill over at AMD/ATi over the past 6-8 months. Maybe he is getting off a sinking ship? :\

Thrax Or was sacked for allowing the 2900 to happen.

GrayFox From an arcitecure standpoint the Radeon Hd 2900 is very impressive..... but they clearly didn't design it with gaming in mind its designed for crunching numbers.

Actually they designed it with DX10 clearly in mind and gave it an instruction set (not all that dissimilar from some of the SSEs) that is hoped to facilitate future graphics designers. As far as being simply a number cruncher ... well ... the FAH GPU client can't run on it :( .

Thrax It was designed to kill the 8800 GTX. Orton and Ruiz both went on record to say that people could not comprehend the performance of the 2900 XT. Unfortunately, its inconceivable performance is at the wrong end of the spectrum.
