DC Universe Online goes Free-To-Play

DC Universe Online goes Free-To-Play

DCUO free to play

Rejoice all you DC Comic fans! DC Universe Online will be free to download for both the PlayStation 3 and the PC as of this October. You will be able to join forces with the likes of Superman, Batman, Joker, Lex Luthor and more. DCUO has only been out for several months, but the trend is clear as it join the likes of many other MMOs such as Star Trek Online, Champions Online, World of Warcraft, and soon City of Heroes as a Free-To-Play game.

“When we launched DC Universe Online, we introduced a very different brand of massive online game driven by fast action combat to PC and PS3 gamers and with that, we discovered a new type of online gamer,” said John Smedley, President, Sony Online Entertainment. “We’ve listened to our community, and we’ve determined that the free-to-play model is the best fit for DC Universe Online

There will be three tiers to enjoy this newly Free-To-Play game.

  • Free: New players will not have access to the current gameplay in DC Universe Online (including Gotham City, Metropolis, and all current raids and alerts). They will have only two character slots, but will be able to  join a league. They will not be able to trade, either. Free level players will be able to purchase downloadable game packs/updates, additional character slots, powers and more through microtransactions.
  • Premium: Any player who has spent at least $5 USD (including former paid subscribers and new players who has purchased $5 of in-game items) will qualify for the Premium access level. Premium level players will have more benefits available to them than the Free level player, including additional character slots, additional inventory slots, and higher cash limits. Downloadable adventure packs, additional character slots, and more can be purchased in-game.
  • Legendary: Maximum features and benefits are included at this level. Loaded with enhanced additional features, Legendary access will be available for a $14.99 USD monthly fee and includes all DLC packs at no cost, more than 15 character slots, more than 80 inventory slots, the ability to form unrestricted-sized leagues, and many more benefits (such as mailing items and cash to other players).

Will you be joining the thousands of people that will give the game a try when it is free in October? I will give it a try just to see if it was worth the hype. I wonder if we can get enough people in Icrontic to form our own league.

primesuspect This trend makes perfect sense. It amounts to a free demo, something that works well for other addictive games.

    Rob-Merritt I might give it a shot.

Unless you really really like consoles, don't bother with the PC version. You will be endlessly frustrated. If you like the social aspects of MMOs, like talking with others, don't bother. The primary reason it's going F2P, whether or not Sony will admit it, is that it never achieved any of the sales or sub goals. Not once.

Up next on the F2P docket, City of Heroes/City of Villains. Who are getting it totally wrong.
