DIY solid state drive

At Icrontic, we’re all about do-it-yourself projects. So, we’re kind of bummed that Sharkoon doesn’t sell its products in the US. For our European readers though, we’ve found something totally cool; the just-announced Sharkoon Flexi-Drive S2S.

It’s a DIY 2.5″ SSD that allows users to plug in up to six 32GB SD cards allowing for a maximum of 192GB. Testing with HD-Tune, Sharkoon claims six 8GB SDHC memory cards with Class 6 speed ratings had a read speed of 140 MB/s and a write speed of 115 MB/s.

Is it perfect? No. But it’s still cool.

  1. Bandrik Sounds cool - I'd love to have this. I remember something like this that ran off of RAM chips and required a direct AC line. Fast, but seemed a bit risky if power failed and the battery backup ran out.

Be cool if they partnered with Transcend or SanDisk to bring this with the 6 32 GB sticks with it at a reduced cost. My question though is what would happen if one of the sticks were to fail? Loss of all data? Or is it auto-allocating?

shwaip yeah it's raid-0 so you'd lose all the data.
