Doctor Who adventure games now available worldwide

Earlier this year, the BBC announced four adventure games based in the world of Doctor Who.  These games serve as four “bonus” episodes for the current season of Doctor Who, and as such feature very good digital representations of Matt Smith (The Doctor) and Karen Gilan (Amy Pond).  Both actors provide their voices for the games as well.

Those games were to release starting in early June in the show’s native UK, with the rest of the world having to wait until “early July”.  Visitors outside the UK were greeted with a message that the games would be available to them soon.

“Soon” has finally arrived.  The first two games, “City of the Daleks” and “Blood of the Cybermen” are now available for the entire world from Direct2Drive for the low price of $4.95 for the pair.  Even better?  The games are currently on sale for $3.70.  UK residents are still able to get the games for free from the BBC web site, but for the rest of the world’s fanbase, the wait is finally over.

ardichoke The question is... are the games any good? I assume no because most games based off TV shows or movies are crap.

I'm about halfway through the first one, and it's not bad. They've put a good amount of work into having a good story, and the graphics are pretty decent, but aren't very taxing on the system even at max settings. The controls can be a bit frustrating at times but it's really a minor complaint. As a standalone game, it's fine (especially for the price). As an extension of the Doctor Who universe it's a pretty good effort. I'd say the team put more effort into making this a good game for fans than most of the "movie games" out there.

A couple of things to keep in mind:
    1. It's not a difficult or complex game
    2. Each episode is only supposed to take two hours
    3. The target audience is Doctor Who fans.

If you're not familiar with Doctor Who, I'd recommend watching some episodes. I believe Netflix has the first four or five seasons since the 2005 revival. It's a great series, and the games seem to fit well.

ardichoke Oh, believe me, I'm familiar with Doctor Who. Well... the newer series anyway. I've never watched the original series. I was quite obsessed with Doctor Who and Torchwood for a while last year. Ran out of content to watch though =/
