Donkey Kong returns in … Donkey Kong Country Returns

It’s as if they sat around and thought: “What’s the most obvious title we can think of…?”

Today Nintendo announced the return of the iconic ape Donkey Kong in a new Wii release called, appropriately, “Donkey Kong Country Returns”.

As Nintendo President Reggie Fils-Amis began his announcement, the signature theme song began to play in the background, and before he even said a word, the crowd latched on and recognized it immediately. A dull roar began to erupt into claps and cheers as the familiar barrels, bananas, and chest-pounding appeared on the big screen.

Donkey Kong Country was an absolutely groundbreaking game for the Super Nintendo: It was the first game to use pre-rendered 3D sprites to give the game very stylized 3D look that ran smoothly on the limited 16-bit hardware of the day. Today’s Wii release doesn’t really look to follow in the footsteps and break any boundaries—it looks like the current state of Wii games.

Still, if you enjoyed the original Donkey Kong Country games, then it looks like you’ll be quite satisfied with this new entry. Once again, it’s on like Donkey Kong.

Donkey Kong Country Returns is set for a Holiday 2010 release on Nintendo Wii.
