Valve has offered to release “Dead Air” from the new Cold Stream DLC early, on July 22nd. The catch—there’s always a catch—is that 20,000 people must earn the “Stream Crosser” achievement (survive a campaign of Cold Stream on any difficulty) by 11:59pm Sunday, 7/10. The rationale behind the generous offer stems from the community development of the Cold Stream DLC from day one. Rather than internally test they’ve offered to keep the community involved and scour the maps for bugs for them.
Now, while this sounds fine and dandy, Valve did kinda announce Cold Stream all the way back in February. The new Cold Stream map dropped in March with the promise that the release of the remaining DLC package would be sometime shortly after Portal 2’s release in April. So, technically, an apparently unfinished Dead Air is to be released “early” while the remaining two or three maps have yet to be seen—though that could have been what caused the delay this entire time, who knows. In any case, true to form, things are a bit slow in the Valve camp, leaving some unhappy campers out in the cold. Nevertheless, the release of (free) DLC is always a win.
Left 4 Dead 2 is 75% off today only! at the Steam Summer Sale.
