DRAM shortage predicted for 2H10

Semiconductor market analyst DRAMeXchange is predicting a major DRAM shortage in the second half of 2010 as OEMs and ODMs buy a flood of memory to replenish stock levels after soaring sales in 1H10.

According to the report, the total PC industry will experience a 13% YoY growth in 2010, with notebooks leading the way at 22.5% growth. Rounding out the remaining markets, netbooks are expected to grow 22%, while desktops will grow a mere 0.6%.

In response to the sharp uptick in PC sales, OEMs/ODMs are expected to follow suit with a sharp uptick in memory purchases to shore up their stock in advance of the second half of the year.

Practically speaking, buyers interested in obtaining cheaper memory would be wise to make their purchases in May or June to take full advantage of the price drops expected throughout early 2010. Any later, and your wallet may take the full brunt of higher demand meeting a lower supply.
