EA adding third-party titles to Origin

Capcom, THQ, Warner Bros. on OriginToday EA announced that it will be adding third-party games from three publishers on its Origin digital download service. We can expect to see titles from THQ, Capcom, and Warner Bros. in this first wave of what will likely be many to follow.

Opinions on Origin are pretty polar. People either feel that Origin is fine, unobtrusive, and works well enough, while others feel that fragmenting the PC gaming platform is ultimately detrimental to the overall PC gaming culture.

Whether you disagree with it or not, EA is likely in for the long haul with Origin. With the success of the Battlefield 3 launch, EA has plenty of room to grow. While Origin has had teething problems, its main competitor Steam also had similar issues in 2004 with the launch of Half Life 2.

Titles from the publishers named have not been announced yet. If I had to guess, we’ll see Saints Row the Third on Origin at the very least.

BHHammy I'm -really- hoping this doesn't play out the way I think it will. Something that's been bugging me the more I think about it, is thus- I'm seriously hoping this doesn't turn into something akin to "console wars".

I'm kind of scared that EA will start playing dirty like Sony or Microsoft and start leaning on companies to do that "timed exclusive" bullcrap (where Origin would get the game first for like a month or so before anybody else), or start pushing for DLC exclusive to their service. If anything, the past few years have shown that gaming companies have been willing to stoop to that sort of level, and it only serves to crowbar gamers into a choice. (Example: ever gotten to play the stellar Joker challenge maps in Arkham Asylum? -Only- if you had a PS3!)

Competition is fine, and I'll give EA's Origin service a year or so to iron out the issues before I pass supreme personal judgement on it. But EA's reputation precedes it, and it's making me nervous on this issue.

NiGHTS Steam already does this, FYI, to secure your preload over Amazon, Gamestop, Best Buy, et. al. Not to the extent that you get the game a month early, but you'll unlock something tied to something else - most obvious example is TF2 hats and, more frequently, additional unlocks based on previous purchases.

Yeah, for TF2 hats (another product on STEAM), or discounts on their games. Just STEAM stuff that affects STEAM, for the most part. Only current STEAM users would really care about it. There's a few things here and there, but I've yet to see any major deal-breakers.

My concerns are a bit different.

Sledgehammer70 I am okay with Origin... Steam is great but it isn;t perfect. It's nice to see someone else rising up, forcing these services to get better. Also I am sure Origin will put games on deep sales like Steam which means more games for a cheaper price! GoGO!
