Ah, nostalgia. This bittersweet mistress leaves us pining for the fjords of games we remember from our youth. Even if we do manage to find all the floppies for a game buried in a drawer, install the requisite drive, and kludge together some type of emulator, one is then presented with the reality that EGA game graphics went the way of the dodo for a reason. Thankfully, for those of us who would like to enjoy a taste of old-school while still benefiting from modern programming and graphic advances, there’s AGD Interactive‘s most recent—and final—release: the fully-licensed Sierra Games remake, Kings Quest III Redux! Even better? The game is completely free for download, and works on both PC and Mac.
However, there is some sad news to go along with this good news. Apparently Kings Quest III Redux is the final licensed remake of a Sierra Games title that we’ll be seeing out of AGD Interactive. According to a released statement from Chris Warren, co-founder of AGD Interactive and its sister company, Himalaya Studios:
“We’re very excited to finally release this game after developing it in secret for so long. We’ve poured a lot of love into this particular project and I think King’s Quest fans will be very pleased at the results, even though reaching the end may be bittersweet. Now we plan to focus on new, original games that retain the same retro charm that made the Sierra games so enduring.”
The studio’s next project, as it moves away from publishing as AGD Interactive, is Mage’s Initiation: Reign of the Elements. The game will feature a similar fantasy-themed RPG adventure setting and old-school puzzle charm. So, why not go snag your free Kings Quest III Redux download. If you find yourself enjoying all the old-school adventure puzzle action, be sure to check out the Himalaya Studios Mage’s Initiation: Reign of the Elements site as well.
