Facebook accidentally exposes private emails

Reports have emerged which indicate that Facebook accidentally exposed millions of private email addresses for users during an update for the site’s code; the emails were public for approximately 30 minutes.

“Last night during Facebook’s regular code push, a bug caused hidden e-mail addresses to be visible briefly. The bug was detected within minutes and corrected,” a representative for Facebook commented.

While the mistake was corrected quickly, the move has been criticized as an unacceptable blunder for a site of Facebook’s size. Hopefully the exposed emails went unnoticed, and no grandmas found out that they could find their grandchildren at sexmonkeyjunky@gmail.com or drunk4life@hotmail.com.

Snarkasm Pro tip: titling it "Facebook accidentally exposes private emails" makes it sound like they published the contents of users' inboxes, not that they unhid users' addresses.

People are concerned about how far into our lives Google is insinuating itself, but I daresay Facebook has more personal information about most people than Google does, and they've been more and more lax -- and more and more willing to give information away -- than I think most people would be comfortable with, if they paid attention.
