Facebook adds community pages

Facebook adds community pages

Facebook recently announced the addition of community pages to their massive social networking enterprise; the new pages are very similar to fan pages, but are about more “unofficial topics.”

At present, fan pages are allegedly reserved for use by businesses and brands, as Facebook prefers that business pages not be run by random fans. That leaves no place, however, for the random topics that end up having fan pages, such as “If a million people become fans of this stick of chapstick, I will name my child Mr. Universe.”

Random topics like this now belong to the realm of community pages, where users can create fan pages for any number of topics.

Community pages “give … users opportunities to express their enthusiasm and creativity, while allowing for official pages to continue representing official entities such as businesses, bands, and public figures,” a representative for Facebook commented.

There is another difference between fan and community pages, as well: Facebook claims that if a page becomes extremely popular, its administration will be turned over to the Facebook community as a whole. That is, if a page becomes popular enough, it will become something more like a Wikipedia article than a fan page, enabling anyone to make edits.

The community page features is already live on Facebook, and interested parties can create their own page here.

CB I like this. I've always thought it silly that people could come up with a clever phrase, which people think is cool, and suddenly they have a captive audience for their political or personal agenda. I wonder what the threshold is for taking the control away from the owner.
