Facebook to adopt simplified privacy policy

facebook_logoFacebook announced on Tuesday that it will be adopting a privacy policy that will be easier to understand, and easier to find.

The new policy comes in response to July accusations by the Canadian Commissioner of Privacy which alleged that the service did not respect user privacy. It will include several resources to help Facebook users better understand the policy, including a glossary of important terms and several informational videos. Facebook expects to post the revised policy in multiple languages, including English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish.

Over the course of the previous week, Facebook solicited open comments on the ideas motivating the new policy. Although less than 7000 Facebook users actually commented, Facebook Deputy General Counsel Michael Richter stated that Facebook’s members generally supported the proposed changes.

Facebook has a storied record that seems to indicate a disregard for user privacy. The simplification and clarification of its privacy policy is a step in the right direction, but many people will undoubtedly remain unconvinced that Facebook is safe to use.
