Most gamers will never forget April 1, 2008. On that day IGN unleashed a trailer for a full-length feature film based on The Legend of Zelda. Excitement grew immediately as fans finally caught a glimpse of one of the the most desired game-to-film adaptations come to life. Only shortly after the initial state of euphoria wore off did fans take a look at the date and realize that this trailer was an elaborate April Fools joke. Since then, many could only wonder how great a feature film based on the Zelda franchise could be.
Monday, indie filmmakers BMB Finishes released a feature-length fan film titled “The Hero of Time“. This nearly 2 hour long film is based in Hyrule and adheres to Legend of Zelda canon. It follows the plot line of Ocarina of Time, with Link being called to find Princess Zelda by the Sage of the Forest, directing him to remove the Master Sword from the Temple of Time, sending him five years into the future. In this future world, the evil lord Ganondorf has taken rule over Hyrule, oppressed the land, and threatens its future. In classic fashion, Link must defeat Ganondorf to rescue the Princess, and save the world.
The film has been in production since 2004. Many feared that the project would never be completed, with the threat of corporate cease and desists and the sheer magnitutude of the movie taking its toll on the small crew. The Hero of Time has seen premieres in Atlanta and Los Angeles, and was released to the internet yesterday on Dailymotion. The film has a surprising amount of VFX work for such a small production crew on a very limited budget. Though it is far from what you would expect from a big time Hollywood blockbuster, the effort put forth by BMB Finishes is to be commended, and every Zelda fan should certainly give The Hero of Time a watch.
