Ubisoft Motion Pictures, the new film-making branch of the grand video game studio, has announced its first major motion picture project, Assassin’s Creed.
Many will be very excited by this news. Assassin’s Creed is one of the best examples of great storytelling in video game history. The world that the writers created for this game is storied and compelling, revealing an alternate history filled with conspiracies, and a series of gameplay mechanics and sequences which are clever and moving. Seeing the story moved onto the silver screen will be very interesting.
In addition to the news of the film itself, we’re finding out that the studio will not be skimping on talent. They have yet to find a director, or even a script writer yet, but they have signed on Michael Fassbender, one of the most talented and sought-after actors on the genre scene right now. His most recent role was in the Ridley Scott sci-fi terror adventure Prometheus, and though the film was terrible, his performance as the android with the ulterior motive was stellar. He also recently played well the part of young Magneto in X-Men: First Class, and before that, one of the de-shirted warriors in 300. In addition to his upcoming role in Assassin’s Creed, Fassbender is lined up for the lead in the legal thriller The Counselor, and to reprise his X-Men role in the as yet untitled X-Men: First Class sequel, which will begin production a bit late—moved from fall 2012 to spring 2013—to accommodate co-star Jennifer Lawrence’s contract to star in the second Hunger Games film.
“Michael Fassbender was our first choice to play the franchise’s iconic hooded hero. Michael is an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor,” said Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of Ubisoft Motion Pictures, in a press release.
All we know about the plot of the new Assassin’s Creed film so far is that it will cover the events of the first game, and that Altaïr will be the protagonist. Fassbender will be playing Altaïr and Desmond. If the film is successful, there is a lot of room for sequels, and at least two more roles for Fassbender to play. Fassbender has also signed on to co-produce the potentially huge franchise of films.
No production or release dates have yet been announced for Assassin’s Creed, but if I’d say a good guess would be for primary photography to begin in the fall of 2013, after Fassbender is done with X-Men, and a theatrical release in the blockbuster season of 2015.
