Ford using Facebook to reveal the 2011 Explorer

No auto company has embraced social media and modern web technology more than Ford. Their social media guru Scott Monty has brought Ford roaring into the modern age with his dedication to the tools that can deliver marketing messages to young and savvy auto buyers. Don’t get me wrong—some of others have followed suit—but Ford did it first (and best).

Now they’re going for another first: They’ll be revealing the 2011 Ford Explorer exclusively on Facebook today. Starting at midnight, their Facebook page is being updated until 7:40 AM EST (Detroit time!), when the reveal will go live.

Ford is no stranger to well-developed online marketing ploys: Their Fiesta Movement got the hipster, glasses-wearing social media set talking about the quirky little cars all over blogs, YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook. While the Explorer is aimed at a decidedly less… artsy crowd, their decision to reveal one of their top selling mainstream vehicles on Facebook clearly demonstrates that Ford has fully embraced the social web as a valid source of sales.

The 2011 Explorer is set to bring a variety of technical innovations to the venerable line, but perhaps its debut may end up being the most high-tech of them all.
