Microsoft recently launched the 2.0 version of Games for Windows LIVE – the PC portal to their LIVE gaming universe that has been around since the advent of the Xbox. GfW used to be installed only with specific Games for Windows such as Halo 2 on Vista, but this new version is available for download by anyone.

I’ll start with the brutal truth: The reason our look is quick is that there’s nothing here. It only takes a quick moment to see everything GfW has to offer right now. I was able to log in to my MS account, see my gamertag and gamerscore, have a quick link to buy MS points, and look at some game videos.

I understand that the service just launched, but there is a serious lack of content right now. Right now it seems that the service is nothing more than a GUI for a bunch of links that click through to regular Microsoft.com locations. You can buy a couple of games, download a few demos, and watch a few trailers. There is NOTHING about friends or achievements, which are the two things I’m looking forward to in a Games for Windows release.

Interface for GfW Live - This is about all there is, seriously.

I’d like to be able to see my Xbox friends and have all the functionality of Xbox Live – chat, messaging, and achievements on my PC – using the same account as my Xbox. Until then – yawn.

Oh wait, it’s called Steam. Dammit. If only Steam could be tied to my XBLA ID. THAT would be incredible.
