Google expands usage of Google Voice on the desktop

Google appears to be expanding the capabilities of Google Voice for the desktop, according to intel TechCrunch as received. Google Voice, the popular voice call service, already has a desktop feature, but it only allows users to make calls to other people using Google Desktop. It now looks like users will soon be able to call from their desktops to mobile and landline phones as well.

The new options appear to be the result of Google’s November 2009 purchase of Gizmo5, an internet-based phone software company. Speculation about how Gizmo5’s platform would be integrated into Google Voice began almost immediately after the acquisition.

It is unknown when the new options on Google Voice from the desktop will go into use, but it’s safe to say that when they do, Skype might have some competition on their hands.
