Google announced on Monday that it has deployed a URL shortener to the company’s Feedburner and Toolbar services.
Creatively titled the Google URL Shortener, the new feature is designed to prepare links for character-limited outlets such as Twitter and status updates.
“People share a lot of links online. This is particularly true as microblogging services such as Twitter have grown in popularity. If you’re not familiar with them, URL shorteners basically squeeze a long URL into fewer characters to make it easier to share with others,” wrote a trio of Google engineers. “With character limits in tweets, status updates and other modes of short form publishing, a shorter URL leaves more room to say what’s on your mind — and that’s why people use them.”
As mentioned, the service is not yet available for broader use such as shorteners like bit.ly, but the new Goo.gl may be “available for a wider audience in the future” should it prove successful.
