Handbrake, perhaps one of the best free video converters available today, has recently been updated to version 0.9.4. This is the first update in a year, and the list of improvements is impressive:
- New version of the x264 encoder (faster, smaller, better quality)
- 64-bit support for OS X and Linux (it is unclear if Windows received the 64-bit binaries)
- External subtitle support
- Live preview
- Improved GUI layout
Our favorite improvement, however, is the addition of the “live” preview function; the new feature allows users to preview the results of their selected settings in a 5-60 clip. The preview is not real-time, however, as creating it depends on source video resolution, the user’s CPU, and quality settings.
Several features have also been removed, including support for AVI, OGG/OGM, and XviD due to obsolescence or support issues. If you require those features, Handbrake’s developers will continue to offer 0.9.3.
