Handbrake updates to 0.9.4

Handbrake updates to 0.9.4

featureHandbrake, perhaps one of the best free video converters available today, has recently been updated to version 0.9.4. This is the first update in a year, and the list of improvements is impressive:

  • New version of the x264 encoder (faster, smaller, better quality)
  • 64-bit support for OS X and Linux (it is unclear if Windows received the 64-bit binaries)
  • External subtitle support
  • Live preview
  • Improved GUI layout

Our favorite improvement, however, is the addition of the “live” preview function; the new feature allows users to preview the results of their selected settings in a 5-60 clip. The preview is not real-time, however, as creating it depends on source video resolution, the user’s CPU, and quality settings.

Several features have also been removed, including support for AVI, OGG/OGM, and XviD due to obsolescence or support issues. If you require those features, Handbrake’s developers will continue to offer 0.9.3.
