It’s hard for me to write about Futuremark without sounding a bit fanboyish. Of course, Futuremark has always been really good to the Icrontic community, supplying our event-goers with swag and gifts and supporting us with licenses of 3DMark and PCMark, but it goes beyond that. I’ve hung out with and talked to Futuremark’s CEO Oliver Baltuch enough times that I consider him a friend and I’ll say this: He is just a blast to be around. His joy for PC technology and gaming are absolutely stone genuine and he’ll excitedly talk your ear off about what his company is up to—not because he’s trying to sell something, but because he just plain loves what he does.
When we last talked, he was very excited about Futuremark’s branch-out into gaming. With their initial foray into the world of PC gaming with Shattered Horizon, they learned a few things and had their appetites primed for more. Their next journey would be into casual gaming on mobile platforms (with Hungribles), and now they’re returning to PC gaming and also jumping into the console world with their new tower defense game—Unstoppable Gorg.
They’re looking for beta testers (PC only, for now) to help them playtest and refine the game before release, much like they did (with success) with Shattered Horizon.
Unstoppable Gorg is a stylish homage to campy 40’s and 50’s sci-fi, wherein you must defend the Earth from determined invades by placing satellites in orbit to halt their relentless advance. Of course, this is a Futuremark game, so the graphics will be top notch (everything is full 3D—no sprites to be found). The trailer should give you an idea of the sense of humor and feel they’re going for:
The beta is open to all PC gamers with a minimum requirement of Windows XP and DirectX 9 hardware. To apply for the beta, PC gamers can either sign up on Futuremark’s forums, or Like Unstoppable Gorg on Facebook.
