Homemade Rounded IDE Cables

Why you should consider it: Why pay money for these rounded cables when you can make your own for nothing? Put the money you save towards an upgrade in your true hardware.

but nothing but ribbons to deal with.

As the move to SATA drives is becoming more and more apparent everyday, standard
IDE ribbon users are beginning to feel more jealous of those little, flexible
cords. Unlike SATA, IDE ribbons clutter the area inside the case, lowering airflow
and heat dissipitation.

A solution many users have conjured is rounded IDE cables. These cables are
flexible, sleek, and sexy. Unlike their evil stepbrothers they allow air to
circulate in the case and bend in any way you desire.

However, these cables do come at a premium price. Newegg’s cheapest rounded,
3 head, IDE, ATA 133 cables cost $7 shipped. They can be priced as high as $25
at retail stores such as Best Buy. Prices like these could be the difference
between an NVIDIA Fx5600 Ultra and a Radeon 9600 Pro.

Why pay money for these rounded cables when you can make your own for nothing?
Put the money you save towards an upgrade in your true hardware.

Materials Needed

  • IDE Ribbon
  • Sharp Pocket Knife or Razor Blade
  • Electrical Tape

 

Procedure

Straighten out the IDE cables on a table or desk. Be sure to flatten out any
wrinkles or bends in the cables.

Take out your sharp pocket knife or razor blade and every 4 or 5 ridges on
the IDE cable carefully make a little puncture in between ridges. Be sure to
make your punctures in between the ridges or else your IDE ribbon will become
defective.

With your fingers, slowly pull at the holes in opposite directions. Be sure
not to rip too quickly! Once again, that could render the IDE cable defective.

Once the IDE cable looks somewhat like a hammock, pull out the electrical
tape. Hold the IDE strands in a circular bunch and start wrapping the electrical
tape around it. If you desire the retail look, be sure to overlap. If all you
desire out of this project is to improve airflow and flexibility, then one inch
gaps between electrical tape bands should suffice.

Once the cable is ready, plug it in and load Windows. Go to My Computer
and check to make sure all your drives are displayed and responding correctly.

NOTE: If any gold or copper wiring is showing from the ribbons,
the cable is probably damaged. Damaged IDE cables may cause data corruption.

That’s it! Within just 5 minutes you’ve saved yourself $14, improved airflow
in your case, and made yourself look half respectable when you go to LAN’s.

    It's unfortunate that rounding IDE cables won't last very much longer, as SATA is coming in nice and quick, allowing the IDE cable to finally enjoy a long, overdue retirement. :)

    The sooner I can get rid of IDE, the better. I just picked up 4 RocketHead 100 SATA Converters today and converted all 4 IDE devices I have over to SATA. Thank god the IC7-MAX3 has 6 SATA ports, as the other 2 SATA drives combined with these other 4 converted IDE devices completely fill the SATA controllers. :)

    Nice thin cables, increased performance (marginally) and the ability to utilize SATA-RAID on IDE devices sure makes things easier. I'm done with IDE forever.

    TheSmJ Yeah, but doing this costs much, much more than just using EIDE, unless mobo's start coming with more than 1 adapter, and more than 2 SATA inputs.

    P.S.
    One way to test the cable is to run a quick test HD diag through the cable after making. The other thing is, the best round cables ARE round and are twisted pair inside and will get less noise so they can be longer for bigger cases. 36" round cables with a metallic braided outer layer with a ground wire from outer braid are the very best, and these will dampen RFIEMIEFI from many fans best also. A FOIL outer wrap under the electrical tape, or between layers of electrical tape, can make an emergency RFIEMIEFI dump layer adn if you can ground it with a wire even better yet-- but this will make the cable more rigid and might not be the result you want, so try without first or try two to three layers of electrcial tape first before you resort to that. Vinyl tape is not best, PVC is best (3M commerical grade).

    Wires wrapped with their nearest pair to cancel noise is beneficial.
    Wires wrapped in a metallic braid to block RFI/EMI is beneficial.
    Wires wrapped again in foil over metallic are beneficial.
    Wires then wrapped in a PVC tape finishes it all off.
