How I Live the Icrontic Life

Editor’s note: We’re proud to introduce our newest Icrontic Life contributor, Rob “Ghoosdum” Updegrove. He’ll be writing about living an efficient yet swank lifestyle.

The recent flare-up of the PC vs console debate here on Icrontic really got me thinking. There is no one single answer, because everyone’s situation is going to be different. Here on Icrontic, we have a term called “Livin’ the Icrontic Life.” As the PC/console debate shows, our membership runs the gamut of opinion on every single topic, and there are many ways in which one can “Live the Life”. As you can probably tell from my response to the PC/console debate, my way of “Living the Life” is to be as cost effective and efficient as I can be.

My $740 investment into gaming hardware.

I like to think that I live an efficient life. The term ‘efficiency’ appeals to me in a very strange way. In my previous line of work, I was a Business Analyst. My solutions, both in terms of coding and documentation, often shocked my coworkers by just how short they were. In the business world, we were used to a requirements document being pages and pages of redundancy, utter crap, and useless graphs. Most of my requirements documents were a single page, but somehow managed to solve the problem even without graphs and redundancy. I liked to provide an efficient product. It’s how I roll.

Everyone looks at efficiency differently, so I’ll clarify my position so we’re all on the same page. The efficiency that appeals to me can be expressed in getting the best value for my dollar. A great example of this is scoring a pair of $600 shoes for $35. It can be expressed by doing things myself instead of paying someone else to do it. It can be expressed by learning about something before jumping in, or jumping into a project in order to learn something.

Another shoe bargain, $20 wingtips.

This is the window through which I view much of the world. It is through this window of efficiency that I will be writing most of my Life articles. I know that we’ve all got different windows on the world. I will share mine here and I hope to see you share yours as well.

    UPSLynx Watching this one intently....

It's the Ghoos effect. These pieces are going to rock.

Garg Great intro; I like that you're explicit about your philosophy. I often say that I am "comfortably behind the curve." It sounds self-deprecating, but I mainly mean how I make use of old stuff on the cheap. As Life continues, I think it'll be cool to see that while we're all on Icrontic because of shared interests, we Live the Life in our own ways.

Ryder Great start Rob, I like it. Look forward to the future.

When I first joined these parts, I always assumed that livin' the life involved computers and games. The more I'm exposed to this community and meet it's members in person, the more dynamic the definition of IC.life becomes. It's become a fascinating thing to learn why people in our community do what they do, and how they go about it.
