How to get the Duke Nukem Forever demo

How to get the Duke Nukem Forever demo

Hail to the king, baby. After all the delays and vaporware jokes, as of yesterday, the Duke Nukem Forever demo is finally in the hands of gamers around the world. At long last, we have living proof that the game does exist in the real world: it really is time to kick ass and chew bubble gum. But how do you get a hold of the demo? There’s a few steps involved before the pig-stomping begins. First you need to get into the “First Access Club“, and to do that you’ve got three options.

Option 1: Purchase Borderlands GOTY edition

Those that have bought the Borderlands Game of the Year (GOTY) edition received a code that gives them access to the First Access Club. If you haven’t already picked this up yet, I fully recommend getting this gem of a game sometime. The fact that it gives access to the Duke Nukem club is just icing on the cake.

Option 2: Already have purchased Borderlands before October 12

Those that have already purchased Borderlands on Steam before the GOTY edition came out, you’re in luck. As long as you had picked up the game before October 12, 2010 you have a little surprise waiting for you. Nestled in with your Borderlands CD keys, there is a CD key that gives you access to the First Access Club. Here’s how to get to your Duke Nukem key:

First, open up Steam. Navigate to your games Library tab, and scroll down or search for Borderlands. You don’t have to have the game installed at the time, so make sure the search is set to “ALL GAMES”. Once you find it in your games list, right click on Borderlands and select “View game CD key”.

In Steam, right-click on your Borderlands game, and chose "View game CD key."

A small dialog box will pop up, containing any CD keys pertaining to Borderlands. Along with any of your DLC expansions for the game, you will also find one labeled “Duke Nukem Forever First Access Club Code”. Simply select this code, and click the “copy key to clipboard” button in the bottom-right. Paste it somewhere else, or just hold onto it for later.

Once you're viewing your Borderlands CD keys, click the Duke Nukem key and copy it.

Option 3: Pre-order Duke Nukem Forever

For those that that don’t have either of the two above (and shame on you for not), you can always just go out and pre-order Duke Nukem Forever.  With your pre-order, you will receive a code that lets you become a First Access Club member.

How to redeem your codes

Once you have your access code, head on over to Gearbox’s First Access Club website. Fill in the info needed below and click the submit button.

Get your early access code, enter it here, and you'll get another code to download your demo.

After your access code is authorized, you’ll be sent to another screen. Here you will be asked to create a Gearbox account. If you already have one, just type both your existing name and password—it’s the same credentials used for the Gearbox forums. Fill out the rest of the form, and pick what platform you want the demo for: PC, 360, or PS3. Once you’re all set, submit it and collect your final Duke Nukem Forever demo download code. As an added bonus, you also have access to a collection of concept art, wallpaper, the official theme song, and more. If you have any issues, you can consult Gearbox’s official forum post.

You're welcome to try my code if you'd like, but it's already been used long, long ago.

From here, take your download code and hop over to your gaming platform of choice. Enter it like any other download or subscription code to redeem it, and start the downloading process. Once it’s ready, enjoy kicking all sorts of ass. Bubble gum optional. By the way, check out our “review” of the “pissier” aspects of the game

Oh hell yeah. It's time to kick ass and chew bubble gum. And I'm all outta gum.

Thrax Silly me for buying the regular Borderlands last Christmas, instead of waiting 3 months for the GOTY edition at the same price. FML.

Note to self: wait for the GOTY edition on any game I want.
  2. vinsanity0723
vinsanity0723 I bought Borderlands day 1 from retail...

These publishers need to re-evaluate which customers are worthy of receiving a Duke demo.
  3. Basil
Basil Didn't work with my uninstalled copy of Borderlands (no option to view CD key).

Starting the download was enough to get the key though, 65% to getting DNF demo. :)

Turns out I have a first access code and I do not care. You want it?

vinsanity0723 From one of my friends who LOVED DN3D: "I'd rather play daikatana than DNF after that demo."

TurboPenguin I thought the demo wasn't good. I remember LANing with friends on the original duke nukem. I seriously think the game is really only 60% finished and someone should have taken the idea and just started new rather than trying to finish someone else's project. i canceled my pre-order for DNF...

primesuspect Duke Nukem Forever looks like it runs on the Doom III engine. Hello 2004.

The demo told me one important thing: I will not pay full price for this game.

When it's down to $14.99 or $9.99 on a Steam sale, I'm in. It'll be good for the lulz. But as for a big commercial splash? It ain't gonna happen with this game.

Didn't know that. I figured the CD keys were viewable at all times, but didn't think to test it. Thanks for the tip, Basil! :D

CrazyJoe If anyone wants to go in on a Borderlands GOTY 4 Pack to get the Demo, I'd definitely be interested...
  14. cozmos anyone have a first access code for the demo they aren't gonna use? I'd love to have one!
