Intel announces quad-core processor line

In a move designed to compete with AMD’s Barcelona line, Intel has announced the Quad-Core Xeon 7300 series. Like the Barcelona, it will feature four processor cores on a single chip.

Intel has been floundering in AMD’s wake in the last few years, and some analysts believe that this and other new releases may allow them to catch up.

Yes- only now it's reality. I take it as further proof that Intel is determined to make sure AMD goes chapter. Intel may lose the processor-to-processor performance fight for a while, but they are determined to hold them off with at least the concept of MORE ... be it in cranking up more gigaHertz, cramming in more cache, or stuffing more CPUs in the rig.

I think it will be a split. AMD will do better in simple through-put tasks because of their superior memory controller- which I think will lend itself well in the server industry where pumping and processing data is numero uno.

However, for sheer number-crunching and CPU intensive tasks like FAH, Intel will do well for one reason: cache. I think the AMD MAY be a smarter core design, but they simply don't have the cache for large ready computations.

However- that is my speculation. Benchmarks, HOPEFULLY starting next week, will tell the tale.

8 Sep 2007 ~ 10:37am muddocktor I surely do hope that Barcelona is up to the task of taking Intel's Core processors on. Competition is good for us consumers and means better prices for the consumer too. As it stands now, except in the 4P server market AMD is getting soundly trounced in performance except in performance/efficiency. And the main reason that AMD has a better performance/efficiency rating in the 2P market right now is due to Intel only offering 2P chipsets for Core that require the use of FBDIMMs instead of DDR2.
