Internet access tax ban up for renewal

The lads over at techdirt lightly cover the fact that the moratorium on taxation for internet access in the US is set to expire on 1 November, 2007. Unlike cable television and POTS, internet access is free from regulatory taxes which helps keeps the cost down for consumers.

As with anything even vaguely political in the US, there are two sides to the issue. We’ll see what happens.

    29 Jul 2007 ~ 2:30pm Qeldroma Unfortunately, trying to keep the government away from a potential source of revenue is like trying to keep flies away from a latrine. Also, more unfortunately, the internet may also be a way to hide taxations as well. Then you know they will "need" further control to catch everyone who will try to work around it.

    Personally, I've been against this- especially states trying to tax goods sold online. It gives them unnecessary and questionably legal access to credit card accounts, trying to get out-of-state organizations to comply, etc. Taxing the net is like rubbing salt in the wounds.
