Today at E3 2010, Nintendo announced a long-awaited return to the core Kirby franchise in the form of Kirby’s Epic Yarn—a highly stylized side-scrolling platformer that hearkens back to the days of Kirby on the Nintendo 64 and NES before that.
In Epic Yarn, Kirby (and the entire world) take the form of different textiles. It actually reminds me a bit of Yoshi’s Story on Nintendo 64: A deceptively complex game that merely appears goofy and childish on the outside. Since Kirby is made of yarn, every game mechanic appears to revolve around that fact: Kirby whips out yarn-ey appendages, grapples things, swings around, and turns into various yarn-ified creations.
It sounds a bit goofy, but once you see it in action, you begin to realize that there is a lot of depth to this title.
Kirby’s Epic Yarn is slated for a Fall 2010 release exclusively on the Nintendo Wii.
