2012 will very likely be known as the year of the tablet if the glut of tablet announcements is any indication. One such announcement comes from an unknown company called Le Pan. The tablet they announced today, the Le Pan II, is video-chat ready, and as long as you’re not concerned about taking high quality pictures and video, this Android-based tablet is quite remarkable for the price. The Le Pan II Tablet seems to have everything your average geek would want in a tablet, minus the fancy camera.
On the outside, the Le Pan II boasts an updated exterior that houses a 9.7″ multi-touch sreen. The screen is wrapped entirely in a tough, brushed aluminum finish with an edge-to-edge glass surface that the manufacturer says feels “solid” .
Inside the Le Pan II you will find a dual-core 1.2ghz processor, 1GB of RAM, GPS, 2-Megapixel front-facing camera and microphone and up to 32GB storage. It comes pre-installed with Android 3.2 Honeycomb, and a promise for a free upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich sometime in early 2012.
There’s not much else to say about this product, except for the price—at a suggested retail of $299.99, the features this tablet may seem to lack might not seem as big a deal to someone who is just looking for a solid, stable, Wi-fi ready tablet for day-to-day tasks.
There may be something to be said for a device that isn’t trying to be all-encompassing. Many people express their distaste with companies who release mobile electronic devices that promise to do everything, but fall short. These devices also cost more money, and in the case of Android devices, are not always updated to stay current with development. Le Pan seems to be narrowing in on making a device that is built well, works well, and does what it says it does. And hey, it’s cheap.
