Learning a new language is never easy. Learning a new language with a complex and thoroughly different writing system is even harder.
There are probably some people out there who fell in love with JRPGs (Japanese Role Playing Games) that would love this one: a JRPG designed to teach Kana and Kanji.
While the game doesn’t really do much for spoken language, pronunciation, or even grammar, it does help supplement the other really tricky part of mastering Japanese. The game starts you off learning the Hiragana and Katakana (the basic phonetic alphabets that Japanese schoolchildren learn) and then gently introduces you to Kanji (the 2500+ Chinese characters that the Japanese have adopted over the centuries).
The graphics aren’t anything spectacular, but if you are learning Japanese and want something far more interesting than flash cards or rote-memorization software, this could be something fun to help supplement your education.
LRNJ’s basic edition is free, but to get access to the full library of Kanji characters, you can unlock different levels of the game: $5-$25 will get you the first 1000 Kanji characters, while $25 will unlock the full game.
