Left 4 Dead is not like most other FPS games. You don’t have a huge glut of weapons to choose from; there is no “ultimate big gun” to get at the end. Part of the challenge is the limited selection of guns. Perhaps the most underappreciated of them is the hunting rifle which, as I will demonstrate, can be a valuable part of your team’s strategy.
There’s nothing like an automatic weapon to mow down those zombies. Who doesn’t want a gun that can shoot continuously for three seconds? The assault rifle seems to be the gun that everyone grabs in Left 4 Dead, but it chews through ammo so quickly that many players find themselves resorting to pistols in short order. In terms of sheer damage, nothing can beat the shotguns. But what if you want to do a little slice and dice work? Shoot that annoying smoker that managed the perfect 100 foot smoke? Got a teammate surrounded by infected? What about that annoying effect of the Horde burning all your ammo? If you’ve ever been frustrated by any of these situations, you might want to take a bit of time to get familiar with the hunting rifle.
There are a few simple ideas that you need to keep in mind when using the hunting rifle. You don’t just start being amazing at it. This guide is intended to help you get on your feet, and keep you ahead of the game. After all, nothing will take down a zombie like a well placed bullet. The hunting rifle is simply a semi-automatic sniper rifle. It carries 15 rounds that can be fired as quickly as you can click. The beauty of this gun lies in what can be done with one or two well placed shots. There are two distinct advantages to using the hunting rifle: piercing (walls and Horde) and one shot Horde kills. First, while the rifle cannot penetrate multiple walls, it can pierce a single wall that’s nearly two feet thick. This means you should always put a shot through the walls and doors to surprise that annoying boomer with a blind shot. The hunting rifle’s penetrating power also means you can kill about 20 zombies with a single round (more on this later). Second, the rifle’s power means you can kill any zombie that reveals even a piece of its body! No need to take the time to make sure you hit a head or torso: Just shoot, relax, move on. I’ll touch on relaxing in just a moment.
The other key to using the hunting rifle lies in its ability to do tons of damage to special zombies. In fact, a single headshot is enough to drop both Hunters and Smokers. Two torso shots will kill a Hunter, and three torso shots kill a Smoker. Kills such as these can be performed at any distance. Your buddies will thank you for having taken calm time to aim and fire! Remember that friendly fire doesn’t count when your teammates are smoked or pounced.
