LEGO Universe development sold to the LEGO Group

R.I.P Netdevil

Gazillion Entertainment has sold the development rights to the LEGO Group today. Rumors were swirling that this means the end of NetDevil and the staff, but according to the press release, LEGO Group has offered employment to the majority of the LEGO Universe development team who will remain in their Colorado studios. The official PR says:

The majority of LEGO Universe development team members, formerly part of Gazillion’s NetDevil subsidiary, have been offered employment by the LEGO Group, who will continue game development and operations from the current Louisville, Colorado studio.

Of course, there are conflicting reports: some say that the word “majority” is a bit of a spin and that most developers who have worked on LEGO Universe are not actually being retained by LEGO Group. Now-former NetDevil artist Toby Cochran says on his personal blog:

From what we’ve been told a handful of artists will be kept on board and continue working on Lego Universe. But at the moment that will be a very, VERY small team. As the count continues to rise on Facebook, they’ve cut over 20 people.

Another day, another dollar, another group of layoffs.
