Saturday, May 2nd is the 8th annual Free Comic Book day, designed to promote youth literacy, comic culture, and local comic book shops. Comic book shops all over the world participate.
Kids are encouraged to visit their local comic shops and get free comic books, while being exposed to all of the other awesome things that can be found in the stores.
When I was a kid, I absolutely loved visiting the comic shop. I was an avid X-Men reader and comic shops are where I first discovered my love for tabletop RPGs. The rows of Dungeons & Dragons boxes, color coded and with amazing pictures on the covers drew me in; I begged my mom to get me the red box when I was 12 and my adventures began.
You can visit the website to find a local shop near you. If there’s a kid in your life who would benefit from discovering a love for comics and games, pick ’em up and take them out for the day. You could change their life.
Metro Detroit residents: Warp9 Comics in Clawson and Auburn Hills is our local FCBD location. Get to it!
