Nintendo’s newest entry in the long-running Metroid series has been hotly anticipated ever since its debut at E3 2009, and fans have eagerly awaited any new information on the game. Unfortunately for those fans, the recently launched teaser site won’t do much if you don’t speak Japanese.
Written entirely in Japanese, the teaser doesn’t seem to reveal much information about the game itself. The site’s intro is very reminiscent of a Squaresoft RPG–a character giving what seems to be a solemn monologue with the transcript appearing as a subtitle. Loose translations suggest the words speak of a dream, or waking from some sort of tragedy. We presume that the woman speaking is Samus, and that she is reflecting upon events in her past. Whatever it says, what we do know serves to solidify that Metroid: Other M will be much more story-driven than previous games in the series.
After the monologue, an image resolves of a woman (again presumed to be Samus) standing at a window overlooking a sprawling city. Music plays, but nothing more happens. All of the text on the page is in Japanese, and it doesn’t seem to reveal much. The only bit of useful information seems to be a date at the bottom-right corner. 2010 is displayed prominently, which is consistent with Iwata’s mention of a summer release date at last year’s E3
If anyone out there knows Japanese, we would love a full translation of the website’s open. Until we know exactly what it says, Metroid fans will continue to wait until more information is revealed on the game. Let the speculation begin!
