Microsoft KIN phones now available

Microsoft announced this week that the KIN ONE and KIN TWO phones are now available for online purchase at Verizon Wireless; in-store availability of the social networking-oriented phones is set to follow on May 13.

The KIN ONE, the smaller, portrait oriented phone retails for $49.99, while the larger KIN TWO is going for $99.99, both after a $100 mail in rebate with a two-year Verizon contract.

What are the KIN phones?

The KIN ONE is a small, portrait-oriented QWERTY slider, which is designed to be operated with one hand if need be. The KIN TWO features landscape orientation and a commensurately larger keyboard. The KIN TWO also has more memory, an 8 megapixel camera to the KIN ONE’s 5 megapixel and the ability to record HD video.

The KIN series was created specifically to service social media, and does so by combining feeds from Facebook, Myspace and Twitter automatically. Users can additionally specify their favorite friends, pushing them to the top of the priority list when the phone displays new updates.

The KIN also offers a way to add videos, photos, texts, web pages, location and status updates to any feed, or all of them at once, by dragging them to a place on the phone called the “Spot.” Further, everything on the phone can be viewed on a web browser through the cloud. Finally, the KIN will also function as a Zune, allowing users to access their music, videos, radio and more.

    AlexDeGruven Those are... ummm... interesting?

Surprisingly powerful considering their 'My first featurephone' look.
  2. Thrax
Thrax Surprisingly powerful indeed. The revelation that they use Tegra APX2xxx-series chips is quite a coup for such small and otherwise (imo) uninteresting devices.

The CPU gives them the voodoo to do what they do, that's for sure.
  3. Cliff_Forster
Cliff_Forster I'm eying these up. Hard to justify when you can get a Palm Pre for 29.99 these days, but I love my Zune pass, and the idea of having that available without having to carry a 2nd piece of hardware really appeals to me.
  4. Linc
Linc Word on the street is that they are bullshit, hard to operate, and pointless.
  5. Thrax
Thrax No surprise, there. They're glorified feature phones with a kitschy UI. They're the dumb kids cheating from the smart kids, but getting the answers all wrong.

Cliff_Forster Plus, if I'm really stuck paying $29.99 for a data plan, I may as well get a full featured smart phone.

Oh well, this really has some potential, the whole idea of a phone that interfaces with Zune Pass really does it for me, but at the same time I don't want a phone that is lacking in so many other places especially when it costs as much as it does to maintain each month.

Picking the wrong smart phone on a two year agreement can be a disaster.

Thrax ^ A lesson I learned all too well. :/
