More about the HTC Supersonic

Though officially unannounced, it has long been known that HTC has been preparing an Android-based smartphone for use on Sprint’s network. More recently learned to be the HTC Supersonic, images of the feature-rich handset have begun appearing across the web.

The latest leaked images, including the render shown right, indicate a sleek, tablet-style handset with a large display set above the standard Android buttons done up in touch-sensitive dress. Other images of the Supersonic include the fascia of a working unit (seen here), the rear of the handset (seen here), as well as an image of the device running HTC’s lauded Sense UI (seen here).

Though known specifications are slim, the HTC Supersonic is perhaps the most ambitious Android phone to date:

  • Android 2.1 (Rumor: Android 3.0)
  • 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon
  • 4.3″ 800×480 display
  • EV-DO Rev. A 3G
  • WiMax 4G

The remainder of the specs are anyone’s guess, but we imagine that it doesn’t stray far from those of the HTC HD2. You might note that the geometry of the earpieces are identical, as are the positions of the camera lens, external speaker and LED flash. If the two devices are as similar as they appear, then the Supersonic should measure approximately 4.74″ x 2.6″ x .43″ (HxWxD) and offer features like Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and AD2P, 802.11b/g, 576MB RAM and 1GB ROM, GPS and A-GPS, a microSD slot, a 5MP camera and 1230mAh battery.

It is not known when the Supersonic will launch, but it is widely believed that the device will not appear before the summer months.

  1. Thrax
Thrax It's a shame that such a sexy phone has already doomed itself with a WiMax radio. Sprint gambled altogether rather poorly on 4G.
  2. Snarkasm
Snarkasm That is a nice bit of internal memory. Too bad the phone is wasted on Sprint's network.

ardichoke From what I've read, it's highly unlikely the Android 3.0 rumor is true. Per an Android developer, the leaked screenshot that spawned the 3.0 rumor takes about 20 seconds to fake. (Source: http://phandroid.com/2010/01/25/android-3-1-on-htc-phandroid-phone/) Still looks like a neat device though.
  4. Juan Other rumors have it on Sprint in March.
