Motorola replaces Google Maps with Skyhook on Android phones

Motorola and Skyhook Wireless announced today announced that Skyhook Wireless’ Core Location software will take the place of Google Maps on the vast majority of Motorola’s Android-based handsets.

Skyhook’s Core Location software uses a combination of Wi-Fi, cellular, and GPS readings to provide accurate location information. Since the service will be integrated into the phones, as is presently the case with Google Maps, all applications will be able to utilize it.

“Precise location is central to the mobile experience, and Skyhook’s Core Location will enhance Motorola’s Android-based mobile devices with its innovative location technology,” commented Christy Wyatt, corporate vice president of software and services product management for Motorola.

Motorola will be the first Android based phone manufacturer to abandon the use of Google Maps.
