Update @ 5:45 PM EST, 5/11/2009: An update to the Windows Vista Team Blog has shed more light on the subject by revealing that Windows 7 will RTM in three months if the RC meets internal standards for quality.
If the telemetry we receive from the Windows 7 RC meets our expectations in terms of quality, then we expect to hit RTM in 3 months or so. Again, check out Steven’s blog post on this process. If this happens, it looks like we’ll be able to have Windows 7 done in time for the holidays. I want to underscore that our top priority remains QUALITY. This guidance does not alter that principle.
Original content @ 10:10 AM EST, 5/11/2009: Speculation regarding Windows 7’s release date has reached fever pitch with the introduction of the official release candidate, and Microsoft’s Senior VP Bill Veghte has added fuel to the fire.
When polled for the release date of Microsoft’s newest OS, Veghte pointed at the holiday season. “A holiday release is accomplishable,” he said. This timeframe coincides with other hints offered by Microsoft and its OEM partners.
In an October 2008 interview, Veghte indicated that Windows 7 would be released in a year. Compal, the manufacturer behind HP and Acer notebooks revealed a September release in March. And various sources at numerous Microsoft conferences throughout 2008 made gentle references to a 2009 timeframe.
In the mean time, Microsoft is maintaining its official stance that Windows 7 is on track for 2010.
