In June 2007, Microsoft announced that it would not be lenient about allowing would-be owners of Windows Vista to operate their potential purchased in a VM. In a complete about face, Microsoft has altered the EULA to allow any and all versions of WinV to be virtualized such as with VMWare. The EULA now states:
Instead of using the software directly on the licensed device, you may install and use the software within only one virtual (or otherwise emulated) hardware system on the licensed device.
Maybe Microsoft realized that they could sell more licenses if people didn’t have to tank their computer with its rusty boat anchor of an OS.
