Netflix on 3DS

Beginning today, the Nintendo 3DS is the next portable system to get Netflix streaming support. Those in the U.S. and Canada that have the Netflix digital streaming plan can download an app for the 3DS to gain access to movies and TV shows.

Having been available on the Nintendo Wii for some time, Nintendo is no stranger to the Netflix service. Now that it’s on the handheld 3DS, users can access Netflix anywhere with Wi-Fi access. Currently there are thousands of free access points across the nation for 3DS users to tap into.

As for the free Netflix app itself, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime assures us that “the new Netflix application looks great, plays great and is a fantastic consumer experience.” Videos are displayed on the 3DS’s top screen, and are currently limited to 2D. However, a library of 3D movies will soon be available to take advantage of the 3DS’s trademark advantage of 3D viewing without special glasses.

The app is available for free from the Nintendo eShop. To access and download, 3DS users must first have downloaded and installed the latest system update; the most recent update was released June 6.

Finally, continuing Nintendo’s kid-friendly environment, the 3DS system’s parental control settings can be used to help restrict access to certain Netflix material. These settings are passed from the 3DS and applied to the Netflix app, making things easier on mindful parents.

Frenchie Makes me wish I had a 3ds. Well this and Ocarina of Time.....

Cliff_Forster I'd love to see a review on what the experience is like. I'm a little skeptical that the experience will be pleasant. Anyone given this a go yet?

primesuspect I did last night. It's a little macro-blocky, but that could have been due to a variety of factors. The 3DS screen is high-res enough to make a movie look good.

The experience, interface, etc. were fine.

Howdy, Stranger!
