On the PC this week, we’ll get to see Runes of Magic. This WoW-esque MMO is free to download and play. Some of the more interesting features include a personal house for every character, which improves as the characters level up, and the ability to level and develop without ever engaging in combat (if you’re into that sort of thing).
Among the DS releases this week, we find I Love Geeks. This physics puzzler is in the now-classic style of The Incredible Machine, and features similar gameplay and visual style. This one stands out from other IM clones because it has a plot. A heartwarming tale of a geek who uses his ability to assemble puzzle-solving contraptions out of everyday items to win the heart of the pretty cheerleader away from the undeserving jocks.
It’s been out on the consoles for a few months, but it’s worth mentioning that The Last Remnant, Square-Enix’s attempt to make an RPG that defies the genre they helped build, is being released for the PC this week. It will be available on shelves and on the popular distribution platform Steam.
Fans of competitive karaoke (you know who you are) don’t have to wait any longer for SingStar Pop. Pitch into sing-battle with your friends, or try to beat your own high score. This edition features songs from Ashlee Simpson, Avril Lavigne, My Chemical Romance, Britney Spears, and Gorillaz. As with all SingStar titles, you can use your EyeToy camera to watch yourself sing along.
The spotlight this week has chosen Grand Ages: Rome for the PC. The sequel to Imperium Romanum, this game combines city building with RTS battles a la the genre-defining Caesar franchise. Many have failed to live up to the high bar set by the original, but fans have had three years to get through the content of Caesar IV, and may need something new to slake their thirst for grape growing and barbarian bashing. The focus of Grand Ages: Rome seems to be the graphics, but it also touts a non-linear storyline and online multi-player support. It will be interesting to see how well they pull off the addition of naval battles.
