New Releases for The Week of Boxing and Bloxing

EA Sports Active

Not satisfied with the amount of activity encouraged by your Wii Fit? Add EA SPORTS Active to your Wii fitness game collection. This title comes with a giant rubber-band, into which the WiiMote and nunchuk fit for resistance exercises, and an LED strap for the nunchuck for tracking the player’s running and kicking motions. It comes with multiple activities including free-throw practice and cardio-boxing. Also, if you already have the WiiFit board, you can use it to add additional functionality to the activities and the progress tracking.

Steal Princess

Steal Princess

Atlus has been doing some great things for DS gamers lately, and hopefully, their latest entry, Steal Princess, will follow the trend. This is a 3D logic and fighting puzzle game, a la Legend of Zelda. Push blocks around, defeat bad guys, stop demons from taking over the world, and so forth. If you’re into that sort of thing, you already know it, so I won’t expound. The real pleasure in this title comes from the writing. If the website is any indication of the humor and playfulness of the game’s writers, then we’re in for a treat.

Terminator Salvation

Terminator Salvation

This week’s movie tie in is the cross platform Terminator Salvation. The story takes place between the Rise of the Machines and Salvation movies. Its features include ‘Unrelenting Intelligent Robotic Enemies’, ‘Advanced Destructible Cover Gameplay’, and ‘Rugged Armored Vehicles Gunfights’. That’s all well and good, but after my disappointment with the non-renewal of Sarah Connor Chronicles, I’m not sure I can force myself to care about Terminator anymore.

Punch-Out!!

Old-school Nintendo and arcade players may recognize Punch-Out!!. This new version of the classic boxing game features vastly improved graphics, and motion-sensitive controls, using the WiiMote. Fans of the original will appreciate the ability to choose the classic, button-mashing controls and the inclusion of many of the old favorite enemies of the protagonist, Little Mac

Warrior Epic

Warrior Epic

This is quickly becoming the year of the free MMORPGs, and this week gives us Warrior Epic. Free to play, but micro-pay for exclusive items and options. Time will tell if this is a good business model, but in the meantime we can try these games before we decide if we want to pay for them, and they have significantly higher production values than other free MMORPGs. Like Free Realms, and others of the ilk, A player can get through a significant portion of the game with no payments, and only must pay if they want special items, or if they want to play past a certain level threshold. The gimmick for this one is interesting: When a character dies, the player gets to choose whether to resurrect them or send them back to the ‘warrior hall’, where you can send them back out as spirit fighters or imbue your weapons with their life-force. Sounds odd, but it couldn’t hurt to hit them up for a copy of their client and see what it’s about.

BOOM BLOX Bash Party

BOOM BLOX Bash Party

This week’s Icrontic Release Spotlight finds BOOM BLOX Bash Party at center stage. If you’ve played BOOM BLOX (and you certainly should have by now) you know how much fun it can be for four players. It might be one of the best four-player pick-up-and-play console games ever (although that might not be saying much considering the selection). This sequel to Steven Spielberg’s first attempt at designing a video game updates the game with several improvements: Thankfully, the ‘shooting’ mechanic has been de-emphasized in favor of a new slingshot mechanic. Of course, the ‘throwing’ and ‘grabbing’ type mechanics are still the most prevalent. In addition, this version includes new block types and shapes, new environments, and support for downloadable add-on content, including fan-crafted levels..

Then there is no talkin to ya, LOL......

No seriously, its just one of those instantly fun "pick up and play" experiences. Its not that deep, its just simple fun.

kryyst I wouldn't call Punch-Out simple fun. It's actually pretty damn hard, unless you've mastered the original game. Which I'm guessing a lot of Wii owners haven't. It's not a deep game in terms of lots of layers to get into. But it's certainly not a game you can beat in 15 mins.

Boom Blox Party Bash is the one I've been waiting for though.

kryyst A weekend spent with Punch Out is a weekend well spent. It's a hell of a lot of fun the motion controls, though probably not ideal for the hardcore player are a lot of fun for the casual boxer. So far it's the best boxing experience on the wii.

Where Punch Out works and every other boxing game so far has failed is that they in no way tried to map punch controls directly to the motion control. So to throw a punch you punch with the controllers or flick them, whatever you like. As long as their is some kind of forward movement your boxer will throw a left or a right.

It works every time, and that is critical to a boxing game. You don't get any weird stutters or expect a jab and throw an uppercut or vice versa. furthermore you aren't conflicted with dancing around the ring and any other odd wiimotion movements. Throw a punch on the controller and your boxer throws a punch.

If you want a head shot you push up on the analog on the nunchuck and you'll throw head shots. Leave it in a neutral position and it's body shots. Hold A when you've got your power meter up and you'll throw a super punch. You also use the analog to dodge, duck and block when you aren't throwing punches.

Punch Out is not a boxing sim. But it doesn't pretend to be. This is an arcade boxing game where you trade punches back and forth. There's no dancing around the ring. This is Punch Out afterall. It's almost more akin to a rythm game in some regards. You learn the pattern and then go through the correct motions.

So far this is the best boxing experience on the Wii. It's not a boxing sim but it throws punches like it should. Until Punch Out Wii Boxing was the best and that's not saying much. The other 3 boxing games that came out to the Wii are dismal affairs they aren't sure if they are sim or arcade or what it actually means to throw a punch.

Until Fight Night comes to the Wii, Punch Out is where it's at.
