If you’ve been filling your download queue with micro-payment MMOs, Dragonica will be on your list soon. The gameplay and art style of this side-scrolling adventure RPG are being heavily compared to Maple Story, the game that, for many of us, was our introduction to micro-payment games. This one is set apart from many others by its incorporation of elements that we normally only see in 3D MMORPGs: party-based PvP combat and in-game guilds.
Your favorite fridge-nuker is back in the low-res cross-platform adventure game, Indiana Jones and The Staff of Kings, a button-timing adventure game with a few whip fights thrown in for good measure. This game is not being released for PC or either of the more powerful consoles. It’s an interesting decision to bring us a new Indy game with graphics that seem to be a port directly from the PSP. The most interesting part of this release, however, is that the Wii version will be shipped with the classic Sierra-esque adventure game Indiana Jones and The Fate of Atlantis. If you got stuck on the giant rings puzzle 15 years ago, then you’ve finally got a chance to redeem yourself–a start from scratch, this time with the WiiMote in place of a mouse. Don’t forget to bring the mayo.
Appearing on the WiiWare channel this week is Swords & Soldiers, which is notable for its genre. We don’t get to see side-scrolling RTS games everyday, and such games are difficult to pull off seriously. Perhaps that’s why this title takes a comedic aproach to the gameplay. Much of the press info mentions a “freakishly large pepper” but does not describe how said pepper incorporates into the flow of the game. The game features three goofily illustrated ancient factions, and a wide array of unit and weapon types.
Icrontic New Release Spotlight shows us the cross-platform release, Prototype. This highly anticipated open-world game tells the story of Alex Mercer. Alex has lost his memory, and finds himself in a New York City that is torn between the mysteriously infected population and a US military which is trying to contain them. His attempt to reconcile his past with his present brings him into conflict with both groups. The major gimmick here is the main character’s abilities. He’s a shapeshifter, and apparently can even change the nature of his own body, creating blades and claws from his own arms, and absorbing other people’s memories in an attempt to untangle the probably-not-actually-all-that-complex storyline. There have been hints that the player will eventually have to take sides in the conflict, which sounds interesting, as the character will likely turn out to be half of each side; I’m guessing that the character turns out to be a soldier infected with a different strain of the disease (his supernatural abilities are similar to those of the Infected), but I don’t have any inside info. The aspect of this game that sounds like the most fun is the free-range, supernatural exploration of a supposedly realistic New York City.
