For the PC this week, we’re getting the highly anticipated Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight, The fourth and final installment in the original Command and Conquer storyline. This time, the focus is on teamwork. During multi-player matches, which will be played in two teams of up to five players each, each player will choose a class—either Attack, Defense or Support—which will drastically affect the options that player has available to them, and will require the players to work together with complementary classes in order to win. In addition, players are no longer eliminated when they lose all of their units. As long as the mission objectives have not yet been lost, the player may re-spawn, and can even change class. Also, the importance of base-building has been minimized. While turtling is still a viable strategy, especially for the Defense class, more focus has been placed on mobility. Every unit and building is mobile, and attacking might mean bringing your whole base with you to the enemy lines. Much like the newest Red Alert game, there will be no single-player campaign. Instead, there is a co-operative campaign, intended to be played with a friend. This will work the same way as the multi-player, with each player choosing one of the three classes, with lots of teamwork required to accomplish the objectives.
Hitting the shelves for PC and Xbox360 this week, Metro 2033 is a first-person survival horror game. Twenty years after a devastating nuclear war, the remains of civilization live in the Metro tunnels beneath Moscow. Play as Artyom, a young man who has known only this dark, confined world of the second dark age, as he ventures out on an important mission to save what’s left of mankind. Explore the dark tunnels with flashlight, gas-mask, and rifle, and even venture out into the desolate surface city. Expect unnerving visuals and startling monsters in this post-apocalyptic world.
Coming to Xbox 360 Arcade is a remake of the classic FPS Perfect Dark. Play Joanna Dark, a secret agent for the Carrington Institute who stumbles upon an evil alien plot to assassinate the President as part of a larger plan to obtain a super weapon from the bottom of the ocean. This game was the best of its age—with its engaging story, dynamic multi-player, and fun hi-tech weapons like the Farsight, a sniper rifle which could shoot through walls. The game engine has received an overhaul, and the graphics have all been remastered to look sharp in 1080p. Play through the stealth-based single-player campaign, or join a deathmatch game with up to four local players or eight Live Arcade players.
This week’s Icrontic Spotlight release is Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon for the Wii, a dark RPG set in a post-apocalyptic world. Seto may be the last person alive on a destroyed planet. As he explores, he discovers that he can see the last thoughts of people long dead—by inspecting their possessions. He must search the ruins for the supplies he needs and hope that he can also locate some other survivors, instead of only the horrible monsters and ghosts which roam the fractured land. This game makes heavy use of the WiiMote functions in the exploration of the world. The things the characters sees and hears in the game are largely dependent on how the WiiMote and nunchuck are held. Shine three different types of flashlights into the darkness to reveal clues and damage light-sensitive enemies, and hear the surroundings differently from the WiiMote speaker depending on how you orient it. Complete with lots of anime cutscenes and some creepy musical scores, anyone who loves post-apocalyptic settings should take a look at this one.
