This might be the first time I’ve used the word ‘clever’ in reference to a sports oriented game: NBA Baller Beats is a clever sports/dance game. The genre bender requires one to have an actual basketball and a hard floor near their Kinect. Unlikely for some of us, perhaps, but for those with their Kinect in a gymnasium—or, as in the video above, a cement-floored loft apartment—this game works like a dance/rhythm game with a prop. Players are required to match the moves on the screen along with the music from a series of pop song. The moves include 20 different basketball dribbling tricks performed along with the beat of the song. The game features a series of tutorials to teach the moves, with feedback from the Kinect camera, a challenge mode for up to 8 players, and if you win the game on ‘baller’ difficulty while a B-ball Bunny is watching, she’ll sleep with you.
If you really want to play Double Dragon, but can’t stand the original graphics anymore, you’re in luck. The defining street brawler has been rebooted in Double Dragon: Neon. What’s excellent here is that the changes are only to the engine and graphics. The game-play, difficulty, and plot have all remained from the original game. There is always a lot of temptation to change something when doing this kind of update, and it’s very rare to see one pulled off with no additional changes, but Double Dragon: Neon claims to be simply Double Dragon with new graphics. The new graphics are in a bit of an odd CGI cartoon style, but they are modern nonetheless, and may serve to bring Double Dragon to a new generation which shies away from classics due to their low graphical fidelity. Mostly, it will be interesting to see if this picks up. If it does, perhaps we’ll see more official remakes of older games with new graphics—fan remakes don’t count.
