For those who enjoy a good crash and burn, we’re getting nail’d this week. In this dirt-bike racing game, the major gimmick seems to be the danger of the courses. A wide variety of crazy, trick-laden courses seem to be built around putting the racers in impossible racing situations, the success of which would make anyone wonder. Race along mountain tops, through a forest fire, through a tunnel with a high-speed train going in the opposite direction, through the open doors of a helicopter, and even along the tops of dirigibles. With realistic graphics and lots of great stunts to attempt, fans of games like Burnout would likely do well to take a look at this one.
Super Meat Boy is a classic-style platformer with typical jump and avoid mechanics with a fair amount of wall-jumping. The player takes on the role of Meat Boy, who is, as his name suggests, a boy with no skin. Meat Boy’s girlfriend, a pile of bandages, has been taken prisoner by a fetus in a jar in a tuxedo. This all seems crazy until you realize that the plots of classic platformers always made just as much sense. Mario, Sonic, Burger Time, etc. All crazy. Anyhow, this game is based on the same developer’s original creation, Meat Boy, which was released for free as a viral flash game. If you haven’t played it yet, you can check it out on Kongregate

If you liked DJ Hero, then you’ll be happy to know that DJ Hero 2 is out this week. Also: Something is wrong inside your brain. Seek assistance.
The Icrontic Spotlight this week bounces along the roulette wheel in the back room of Fallout: New Vegas. Returning once again to the Havok engine, New Vegas takes place roughly three years after the events of Fallout 3, though it is not a continuation of the story. Instead, this installment returns the player to the western United States (where Fallout and Fallout 2 were set), where the New California Republic struggles with other factions for control of the mostly-intact city of Las Vegas and the Mojave Desert. The game opens with the protagonist having been shot in the head and left in a shallow grave. Rescued by a robot, and saved by a skilled doctor, the character must investigate his/her own attempted murder while exploring the city and wasteland. This entry in the franchise takes a few interesting elements from its engine-brother Oblivion. Players will be kept track of in a visible reputation system, which will gauge the player’s reputation as positive or negative, not only in the world at large, but also in the eyes of the many factions vying for control of the area. In addition, the player will collect plants and research recipes in a mechanic similar to Oblivion‘s alchemy system. Of course, the VATS system from Fallout 3 will make a return, as well as the SPECIAL character generation and the popular Pipboy. Other than the engine, the game seems fully new, which makes one wonder why they chose not to call it Fallout 4. Perhaps we will discover the reason soon.
