New Releases for the Week of Burdens and Boxes

New Releases for the Week of Burdens and Boxes

Cargo Commander is an action platforming puzzler. Big deal, there are about a blazillion of those, right? Sure, but you’ll want to check this one out because the levels are randomized. The player takes on the role of a Cargo Corps. employee out in deep space. It’s his job to attract cargo containers, then get the cargo out of them, defeating alien monsters in the process. As he attracts more containers, they attach to his existing complex, and grow the game-space. Containers are attracted simply by entering their name. Any name will do, since that name will be used as the seed for random generation of the level. If the level is cool, you can share the name with other players, and they can get the same level by entering the same name. The game-play itself is rather rudimentary running, jumping and shooting type stuff, but the randomized-yet-repeatable levels make it an interesting experiment.

Assassin’s Creed III, the highly-anticipated fifth installment in the best-selling Assassin’s Creed franchise, will cover the story of yet another of Desmond’s ancestors, this time moving the player up into the American Revolutionary War to stop Templar machinations during the early days leading up to the Union. You already know what you need to know about that one though. The marketing is so pervasive, and the series so popular, there is nothing new for me to tell you about. Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation, however, you might not know about. This title, developed and released in parallel, is the mobile version of the adventure, starring a new character who is not one of Desmond’s ancestors. Abstergo has collected the memories of an assassin named Aveline de Grandpré, a woman of French and African ancestry working with former slaves in Louisiana during the events of Assassin’s Creed III. The memories are being used as propaganda by Abstergo to show that the Templars needn’t always be the enemies of the Assassins. The gameplay is the same as the base game, even uses the same engine with only slight modifications to run on the Vita. The character’s abilities will be slightly different as well. Aveline will not be as strong as Connor, but she’ll have the ability to dual-wield her weapons. Players who also own Assassin’s Creed III on the PS3 will be able to link the games to get bonus items in both. There will also be a point in the story when the two characters cross paths, an event which will appear in both games.

Defenders Quest is an RPG tower defense game. Within, one gathers a party of adventurers which serve as the ‘towers’ in each level, they can be placed in the level using the protagonist’s ‘psy’ power, and as enemies are defeated, this power builds, and can be used to upgrade the units until the combat is complete. Between battles, the party earns experience, and when levels are gained, the characters can pick new abilities off of a skill tree which is unique to each class, allowing them to be upgraded more effectively. The player can also buy and sell weapons and equipment for the party, and customize the look of the party members in lots of ways. The game may not be heavy on graphics, but it seems to have the mechanics down, and it has a story that the creators seem to be proud of.  This may be one to install on the laptop for downtime while traveling.
